President Trump said Tuesday he would be happy with companies that decline to seek refunds for tariffs that the Supreme Court invalidated.
While thousands of firms are submitting claims for refunds, large companies such as Amazon and Apple have not sought redress after the justices ruled that Mr. Trump illegally imposed duties under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
The president was enraged by the court decision, so CNBC on Tuesday asked whether big companies were trying to curry favor with him by balking at refunds.
“If they don’t do that, they got to know me very well,” Mr. Trump said in the on-air interview. “I’m very honored by what you just said.
“If they don’t do that, I’ll remember them.”
Tariffs are duties on foreign goods that enter U.S. markets.
Mr. Trump says the levies are a great way to protect U.S. industries while reaping revenue and gaining leverage over foreign nations.
The Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in February blew a big hole in Mr. Trump’s trade plans and forced the government to give back some of the billions in tariff revenue it collected in 2025.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection launched a portal on Monday that lets companies submit aggregate claims for refunds, plus interest.
The president complained about the tariff ruling during his CNBC interview.
“I’m not happy with the Supreme Court, I’ll be honest with you,” Trump said.
Congressional Democrats have urged companies that seek refunds to pass along the savings to customers, especially if they raised prices to deal with the tariffs. It’s unclear if — or how — companies will do that.
