Back when I was Region President in 2017, then International President Margie Miller wanted a new tag line to go with the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism logo. We came up with the tag line we use today: “We are Women’s League.” The “we” in that statement is not the organization, it is you and I, the membership, not the organization.
Women’s League is one of the most inclusive organizations I have ever worked with. I was 26 when I joined my first Sisterhood Affiliate. In a matter of a few weeks, I was on the board as volunteer coordinator for the kiddush lunch.
When I moved away from Lexington to Fairfax, Virginia, I went to the opening brunch for the Sisterhood Affiliate and Men’s Club and sat down next to someone named DeeDee Eisenson. I had just spent a year in Japan before moving to Fairfax and it turned out DeeDee had also lived in Japan at one time. Connections were made, and a few months later, Louise Hodin, then President of the Olam Tikva Sisterhood, asked me to join the board.
Before I moved to California, I went to WLCJ Convention at the Concord and sought out the Northern California branch party. I met the women there and when I moved into Saratoga and joined Congregation Beth David, I already had women I knew in the community and, you guessed it, soon after joining Congregation Beth David I was on the board.
This is what Women’s League is all about: connecting Jewish women to fellow Jewish women. This is what we all need to be: welcoming and inviting new women when they join our synagogues and our Sisterhood Affiliates, inviting them to activities and trainings, and giving them an opportunity to be on the board. And this is why we are Women’s League.
Shabbat Shalom,
