The Most Public School Thing Ever – HotAir

Public schools—really, they should be called “government schools”—long ago gave up the idea that they existed solely to educate children.

I really can’t say exactly when, if there is a definitive “when,” this transformation occurred. I suspect it happened in much the same way that bankruptcy does: slowly, then all at once.

Few school systems are more exemplary of the decline of public schools and their transformation into communist indoctrination camps than Chicago’s.

The Chicago Teachers’ Union basically runs the City of Chicago now, with Mayor Brandon Johnson, a former union leader, stripping the city of resources as it declines into a failed city on the verge of bankruptcy. It is also a proudly communist institution that doesn’t focus on teaching students things like how to read or do math, but on how to become political revolutionaries.

During COVID, no union fought harder or more viciously to keep schools closed, and now that in-person schooling is back, the teachers fight hard to close them again for anything other than political indoctrination.

Case in point: the successful fight to turn May Day, the communist holiday on which the old Soviet Union paraded, into a “Day of Civic Action,” on which students participate in political protests along with socialists. They make signs, protest against capitalism, and presumably work toward the day when the Bolsheviks take over America.

The school board initially fought the idea because, well, the new superintendent thought that kids who can’t read or do math should be in the classroom, as if leaving them in the hands of teachers who themselves can barely read, write, or do math would do any good.

But she lost the battle, because of course she did. The CTU runs the city. She lost so badly that all the district’s resources are being mobilized to support the “field trips” to protests as if they were part of the kids’ educations.

It really is the most public-school thing ever, and could only be topped by requiring boys to wear dresses, “tucking” their underwear, and high heels, and girls to wear breast binders.

The CTU won. Students will participate in a “Civic Day of Action” where they be able make pro-labor, pro-Palestine, anti-ICE and anti-Trump posters and then parade them around their neighborhoods.  The new CPS Superintendent was just put in her place by the mayor, the union, and her board – she has zero power.

Chicago is hardly unique in this approach to what makes government-run education systems so destructive. Teachers around the country are building up a movement to duplicate the curricular shift.

Teaching kids the normal subjects is, apparently, too time-consuming and difficult for the current crop of teachers, and obviously too boring for people who see their real mission as forwarding The Revolution.

Chicago is leading the way, but a long parade of public schools marches behind it.

The goal is simple: to make students as ignorant and pliant as possible, and to form the ground troops for the coming anti-colonial revolution.

What could be more in line with this than shutting down schools, using their resources, and taking kids to communist protests?

Editor’s note: If we thought our job in pushing back against the Academia/media/Democrat censorship complex was over with the election, think again. This is going to be a long fight.
