Sen. Steve Daines Commemorates Dobbs Anniversary

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—Four years ago on June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade with the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, sending the abortion issue back to the people through their elected representatives. On Wednesday, for that anniversary, Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., introduced a resolution from the Senate floor to mark the Dobbs anniversary.

Republican Sens. James Lankford of Oklahoma, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Ted Budd of North Carolina, Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, Josh Hawley of Missouri, Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, Jim Risch of Idaho, Katie Britt of Alabama, John Cornyn of Texas, Deb Fischer of Nebraska, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Mike Rounds of South Dakota, Rick Scott of Florida, and Jim Banks of Indiana also introduced the resolution.

“Four years ago today was a pivotal moment in our nation’s history: the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Since that day, countless unborn lives have been saved, but there remains more work to be done, especially as pro-choice advocates push to normalize the abortion pill. As we reflect on the progress we’ve made, we must strongly recommit to defending truth: Every life has inherent dignity and deserves protection,” said Daines.

The abortion pill method now accounts for a majority of abortions. It can also be dangerous, given its potential side-effects and the lack of involvement from a doctor due to relaxed regulations from the Biden administration. Political leaders and pro-life groups are also urging action at the national and state level against the drug.

The text of the resolution further warns that “the dangerous mail-order abortion drug policy advanced by the Biden Administration undermined and continues to undermine the ability of States to enforce laws enacted to protect unborn life.”

The resolution also references the Declaration of Independence, the 63 million unborn lives lost to abortion under Roe and cites the Dobbs decision’s reasoning behind overturning Roe, including that “the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion.”

It also brought up pro-life efforts, including states taking “historic steps” to protect life and the 2,700 pregnancy resource centers serving women.

Daines founded the Senate’s pro-life caucus in 2019 and is chairman emeritus. Hyde-Smith is the current chairwoman.

Having served in the U.S. Senate since 2015, Daines is finishing up his last term. He’ll be replaced by Kurt Alme as the Republican nominee. Daines has consistently been a pro-life voice in the chamber, not merely around the anniversary of the Dobbs decision, but also for the March for Life.

Each January, the March for Life has taken place; mourning Roe while it was the law of the land, and now celebrating its reversal and continuing the fight to protect life.
