Scott Wiener’s Struggle Sessions – HotAir

As you may know, California State Senator Scott Wiener is currently running for Congress. Both he and Connie Chan, a member of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, are competing in the state’s 11th district to be the person who takes the seat held by the (finally) retiring Nancy Pelosi. Wiener has been leading the race and won the primary by about 11 points over Chan (41-30). However, Chan has been endorsed by Pelosi so could have a fundraising advantage headed into the general election.

But in just the past week a new problem seems to have cropped up for Wiener. He was at a restaurant in the Mission District when he was attacked by people for his stance on Israel.

This is typical woke politics. Denounce someone to their face and demand that they literally speak words of agreement without politics. “Are you against the murders of innocent children and people getting killed in Palestine. If you are then you will say ‘Free Palestine.'”

This is, of course, absurdly stupid. Everyone is against innocent children being killed, including the Israeli kids killed by Hamas on 10/7. If you believe that’s wrong, you must say “I stand with Israel.” See how that works?

No, the person shouting at Scott Wiener doesn’t see how it works, he’s just a shrieking, woke lunatic.

The backstory here is that, for quite a while after 10/7, Wiener regularly expressed his support for Israel. And that’s what set these people off. Once it was clear that position would be a problem for him in the CA-11 race, he put out a video saying he’d changed his mind.

He released that back in January, essentially capitulating to the anti-Israel left. But his previous refusal to say it has clearly irritated some of the far-left, anti-Israel extremists in San Francisco.

Yesterday, something similar happened when Wiener attended a pro-trans march in San Francisco. He was harassed and hounded out by a small group of people screaming at him about Gaza. As some people keep shouting “We f***ing hate you, you piece of s**t!” the guy filming gets more and more hysterical until he’s shouting, “How could you betray queers?!”

Many people have pointed out that queers for Palestine is probably the dumbest political coalition in existence and that’s really saying something. None of these people shouting would las a week in Gaza, where gay people are routinely murdered by the same people who carried out the 10/7 attack. Calling for “free Palestine” is literally calling for a spot on the map where gay people will be hunted and murdered in perpetuity.

In case you’re wondering, here’s the person behind the camera.

Anyway, I think the people harassing Wiener are a fairly small portion of the electorate, even in San Francisco. So far the videos seem to be generating as much (or more) backlash as support. Wiener put out a statement about it yesterday.

”Last night I attended the trans march, as I’ve done each year for the past 22 years since the first march in 2004. I attend each year in solidarity with our trans siblings, who are facing existential threats from right wing extremists, including the President. It has been a deep honor to partner for many years with trans people to advance legislation and budget requests to support the community.

”As I walked through Dolores Park to participate in a trans-led Pride Shabbat service in connection with the trans march, a group of people began screaming at me, ran up to me, surrounded me, and began harassing me, both verbally and physically, including physical contact. They made statements about my ‘Israeli handlers,’ among many other inaccurate, extreme, and vile statements. They were so physically and verbally aggressive that it was impossible for me to safely remain in the park. As a result, I left the park and, for the very first time, did not participate in the trans march.

“This follows an incident Wednesday night at a bar in the Mission where I’d gone to watch a World Cup game. During the game, a man accosted me in a corner of the bar, effectively cornering me and the young women staffers who were with me. He screamed abuse at me and our staff before being ejected by the bar’s employees. After being ejected, the man remained outside the bar, shouting my name and pounding on the side of the bar near where I was sitting for several minutes. The same individual, in December 2023, stalked me on a plane and in an airport, shouting at me about my ‘tainted bloodline.’

”I have no objection whatsoever to anyone disagreeing with me, opposing me, or protesting me. All of that is core to democracy. I also have no issue when people talk to me on the street and ask questions or express opposition. That’s democracy, even when the people engaging in this conduct misrepresent my views.

“But when opposition and disagreement transition to harassment, including cornering me, touching me, or trying to physically bully me out of a public event, that crosses a line.  We’re living in a time when violence is all too often threatened or used against people in public life. In San Francisco, we’re better than that.”

SF’s Mayor expressed his support for Wiener.

So this may be helping Wiener as much as hurting him. Lots of people arguing on X that this is what the left always does, I.e. the circular firing squad. They’re not wrong. If failing to capitulate on your pet issue quickly enough is reason to run someone out of your camp entirely, you’re not going to have a lot of allies in the long run.

On the other hand, Wiener has been allies with these same people, many of whom are steeped in woke politics. Now he’s getting a taste of being on the other side of that and it’s not pleasant.
