Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama’s Hollywood film production company is leaving Netflix to operate independently, multiple news outlets report.
Their company, Higher Ground Productions, is expected to break from the streaming platform late this year when their current deal expires.
Mr. Obama said this will allow for greater creative flexibility and the ability to work with multiple production companies.
Higher Ground is known for documentaries such as 2019’s “American Factory,” which won an Academy Award, and 2020’s “Becoming,” as well as the 2023 biographical drama “Rustin,” starring Coleman Domingo.
The production company will continue to work with Netflix on projects.
The Obamas first struck their multi-year Netflix deal in 2018. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but industry observers estimated the contract to be worth more than $50 million.
