DALLAS— The midterm elections are just weeks away, but House Speaker Mike Johnson says Republicans are “not done yet.” The GOP has a guaranteed majority until January, when the next Congress begins, and they still have time to pass legislation and codify the conservative agenda.
Johnson took the stage on Thursday night at the Republican National Committee’s Midterm Election Convention to remind Republicans who they are running against and what might happen if Democrats win the majority.
“We’re not just running to decide the majority of Congress for the next two years,” Johnson said. “It now falls to us to fight to preserve the country that we all love. It’s now being attacked from within,” he continued, warning that next year there will be communists in Congress.
Johnson said that this has been the most productive Congress in the history of the institution since 1789.
“In the House, we passed over 900 pieces of legislation, and that includes the SAVE America Act four times. It’s been the most productive Congress in 80 years, and we are not done yet,” he continued.
“Right now, our Republican majority, and President Trump, are working around the clock. The president never sleeps, and we don’t either,” he said.
Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, told the Daily Signal that Republicans should be doing everything they can to pass Trumps policies to ensure they are law, even after the president leaves office.
“We ought to be doing as much as we practically can to get as many of the president’s executive orders codified into law,” Gill told the Daily Signal when asked what he hopes the 119th Congress can accomplish from now until the next Congress.
“There’s a lot we can still do on the DOGE front. These are very, very popular policies ensuring that American tax dollars aren’t being wasted. That’s something that a lot of Democrats, at least outside of Washington, would support as well,” Gill continued.
“I think that there’s a slew of issues that we ought to be focused on, and I think sanctuary cities should be sort of priority No. 1, and DOGE probably priority No. 2,” he concluded.
Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., echoed a similar response when asked if he is hopeful Republicans will be able to codify Trump’s border policies into law, including stricter immigration policy and ending sanctuary cities.
“I think ending sanctuary cities and states is paramount, the vast majority of Americans agree with that, and certainly that is something that I would like to see come to the floor for a vote,” Lawler told the Daily Signal on day one of the convention.
On day two of the convention, Thursday, Lawler brought Sheridan Gorman’s family on stage to speak about how sanctuary city policies led to Sheridan getting murdered by an illegal alien.
“From my vantage point, sanctuary jurisdictions need to end,” Lawler continued, speaking to the Daily Signal. “I think a lot of the border policies that the President has enacted need to be enshrined into law because we do not want to go backwards and allow Joe Biden’s policies to come back and allow the floodgates to open at our borders because Democrats refuse to enforce stricter border policies.”
