It’s amazing to me that this barely news outside of the LA area. Yesterday, a man later identified as Juan Luis Estrada carjacked someone in downtown LA and then went on a wild ride in the stolen car, hitting several other cars and injuring more than half a dozen pedestrians.
On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a suspect described as a Hispanic male adult allegedly carjacked a white Toyota Camry at knifepoint in downtown Los Angeles.
Approximately one hour later, at about 6:55 p.m., the suspect, driving the stolen vehicle, was involved in a felony hit-and-run collision near Centinela Avenue and Washington Boulevard in Culver City that injured four pedestrians.
Witnesses at the first hit-and-run gave police information including the license plate of the car. That led to them finding it about 30 minutes later, but the driver refused to pull over.
During the pursuit, officers observed the suspect drive with an extreme disregard for public safety. The suspect traveled at high speeds, ran multiple red lights, drove into opposing lanes of traffic, and weaved recklessly around other vehicles. Officers also observed the suspect repeatedly steer toward pedestrians who were in or near the roadway.
Based on their observations, officers believed the suspect was intentionally attempting to strike pedestrians. The suspect’s actions created a clear and immediate danger to community members and demonstrated a complete disregard for human life.
As the pursuit continued, the suspect struck multiple victims throughout the city. Near Braddock Drive and Sepulveda Boulevard, the suspect struck an adult pedestrian. A short time later, near Culver Boulevard and Le Bourget Avenue, the suspect struck two juveniles riding an e-bike. The suspect then struck another pedestrian near Canfield Avenue and Culver Boulevard before continuing to flee from officers.
The chase ended when the suspect drove over a curb and crashed into a car waiting in a McDonald’s drive-thru.

Police did arrest the suspect. He’s now being charged with multiple felonies including attempted murder. The victims were aged 15-70 and it appears none of them have died.

So far there is no word on what motivated this lunatic. Police say they don’t know. A search turns up a man with the same name, who is the same age and resides in the same city who has a string of other arrests going back to 2014. I can’t confirm it’s the same person but if so this is someone with a history of drug use and violence. The most recent arrest is from just last month.
Again, it’s amazing to me that someone could threaten and injure this many people and it barely makes a blip. There are lots of unanswered questions. Is Estrada a citizen or a migrant? So far no one is saying. Was he drunk or high or did he have some other motive yesterday? Maybe we’ll get more about this eventually but for now everyone is just left guessing.
