A bus crashed into six other vehicles on U.S. Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia, on Friday, leaving five dead and three critically injured.
The crash occurred at around 2:35 a.m. at mile marker 146 near exit 143 for Garrisonville Road in Stafford and Aquia, according to Richmond’s WTVR-TV.
The drivers of the six other vehicles involved slowed down approaching the work zone, but the driver of the bus didn’t, thereby causing the crash, Virginia State Police said, according to WTVR.
Virginia State Police spokesman Matthew Demlein said all five dead were inside the six other vehicles involved, according to InsideNoVa.com, and 34 others were taken to area hospitals, three of whom had critical injuries.

Mr. Demlein did not specify whether the three in critical condition were riding in the six nonbus vehicles.
The state police said charges are pending, according to Washington’s WTOP-FM. None of the five dead or the bus driver has been publicly identified.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash, the Virginia Department of Transportation started detouring traffic to U.S. Route 1, specifically the exit for Marine Corps Base Quantico, with traffic rejoining I-95 southbound at exit 143.
At around 9:48 a.m., Virginia transportation officials reopened two lanes of I-95 southbound and ended the detour, with one lane still closed.
