USAID Shipped 11,000 Viral Samples to Wuhan Institute of Virology – HotAir

You know what the Wuhan Institute of Virology didn’t have enough of?

Viral samples. So the fine folks at USAID collected 11,000 viral samples and shipped them off to the Wuhan Institute of Virology–the very same lab that gifted the world COVID-19, likely through engineering.

USAID worked with the State Department, which is the agency that inspected WIV and found that the lab didn’t even meet the minimum biosafety standards any sane person would expect. That was no barrier to sending the viruses off to the lab.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) shipped thousands of viral samples to a lab in Wuhan over the course of a 10-year program even though it had no formal agreement with the lab in place, according to previously unreported documents.

The documents show that USAID funded the exportation of 11,000 samples from Yunnan Province, where some of the closest relatives of the COVID-19 virus circulate, to Wuhan, the epicenter of the pandemic, with no apparent plan for ensuring the samples were not misdirected to bioweapons and remained accessible to the U.S. government.

And there is plenty of evidence that the WIV was engaged in biowarfare research. The lab worked closely with the People’s Liberation Army, and while armed forces often do bioweapons research to prepare for the possibility of adversaries using these illegal weapons, it beggars belief that the US government would be funding research that could be turned against us in a conflict that people fear is likely.

USAID’s sample dispensation plan for China is sparse: “No need [sic] information from Yunnan. They were never an official lab partner for PREDICT. All samples they helped collected [sic] are sent to, tested, and stored in Wuhan.”

The “lab” refers to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). WIV was a close partner of USAID contractor EcoHealth Alliance and a slated partner for a PREDICT-like program supported by the State Department. The lab has poor biosafety practices and ties to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Even worse, WIV was partnering with the EcoHealth Alliance to apply for grants from the US government to do illegal gain-of-function research, and regularly failed to make mandatory reports on the work they were conducting using US research grants.

The organization has since been debarred from receiving US research funding for withholding evidence, and its former president has been permanently debarred due to his persistent dishonesty.

It is appalling both that this was considered perfectly normal and that it has taken years for any of this information to come out. COVID-19 was the worst pandemic in the 21st century, and severely disrupted societies around the world. We have not yet recovered from the damage done, and many, many never do so. Our society was split apart.

Yet, there has been remarkably little curiosity about what exactly happened, and a slow-walking cover-up of the government’s role in both the creation and release of COVID-19 and its failed policies to contain it

The more we know, the worse it looks. But the longer it takes to reveal the evidence, the less chance that any lessons will be learned or anybody held accountable.

And without accountability, this will surely happen again. People respond to incentives and punishments. That is a lesson as old as time. The CYA culture is immensely destructive.
