Three U.S. Catholic cardinals are urging President Trump to use a moral compass in foreign policy, noting the U.S. capture of Venezuela’s president, efforts to acquire Greenland and cuts to foreign aid.
Cardinals Blase Cupich of Chicago, Robert McElroy of Washington and Joseph Tobin of Newark, N.J., issued a joint statement on Monday saying the administration’s foreign policy is steeped in “polarization, partisanship, and narrow economic and social interests,” The Associated Press reported.
Cardinals Cupich, McElroy and Tobin are leaders of the progressive wing of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Their statement marked the second time in as many months that members of the U.S. Catholic hierarchy have spoken out against the Trump administration’s foreign policy moves. In November, the entire U.S. conference condemned the administration’s mass deportation of migrants and “vilification” of them in the public discourse, the AP reported.
