Two teen boys arrested after gun-related lockdown at Montgomery County, Maryland, high school

The Montgomery County Police Department arrested two teen boys at Northwood High School in Rockville, Maryland, Thursday after a gun-related lockdown.

The police department did not name either of the 15-year-old student suspects, one of whom faces charges of possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds. Both boys face charges of disrupting school operations, police said in a release Thursday.

The police department responded to the school after getting a report of a person with a gun inside the building at around 11:04 a.m.

Montgomery County Public Schools put Northwood into “secure” status, police said.

The gun reported was in fact a water gun being put into a car by three students who were finished for the day, Northwood High School Principal Jonathan Garrick told school families in a message, according to Bethesda Magazine.

Before the police left Northwood, however, another report of a person with a gun came in at around 12:21 p.m., the police said, and the school system placed Northwood on full lockdown.

Northwood administrators and Montgomery County Police Department community engagement officers found the two suspects in a room. The magazine of a gun was visible on a desk, and officers found a BB gun on one of the suspects and a 9 mm round in the pocket of the other.

Police took both teens to a local station, where the two suspects were subsequently released to the custody of their guardians.
