President Trump said he’ll give commencement addresses for the University of Alabama and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.
“I have agreed to do the Commencement Address at two really GREAT places, the University of Alabama and, WEST POINT. Stay tuned for times and dates!!!” Mr. Trump posted Monday on Truth Social.
Alabama has graduation ceremonies scheduled for May 3 and 4, with the commencement at West Point on May 24.
While the schools haven’t shared any information about Mr. Trump’s appearance, Sen. Katie Britt, Alabama Republican, said she’s “thrilled” that the president will speak.
“What a tremendous honor for my alma mater,” Ms. Britt wrote on X. “Looking forward to a historic occasion for graduates and their families.”
Mr. Trump previously spoke at the West Point commencement in 2020.
The announcement comes amid rising tensions between the Trump administration and colleges.
“Perhaps Harvard should lose its tax-exempt status and be taxed as a political entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological and terrorist inspired/supporting ’sickness?’ Remember tax-exempt status is totally contingent on acting in the public interest!” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social last week.
His administration has already frozen $2.2 billion in federal grants for the Ivy League school.
Harvard President Alan Garber said last week that the university will “not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights.”
He added, “No government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.”
Harvard sued the administration Monday over the frozen funds.
The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights sent letters to 60 universities last month warning them of enforcement actions if the schools don’t protect their Jewish students.
