President Trump signed a bill Tuesday to reopen the federal government after a four-day partial shutdown.
Mr. Trump signed the consolidation appropriations legislation in the Oval Office while flanked by top Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson.
“This bill is a great victory for the American people,” Mr. Trump said. “Instead of a bloated and wasteful omnibus monstrosity full of special-interest handouts, we’ve succeeded in passing a fiscally responsible package that actually cuts wasteful federal spending while supporting critical programs.”
Mr. Trump said the bill would eliminate “woke” spending to broadcasters and limit foreign aid so that it funds programs that work.
He said it also funds first lady Melania Trump’s foster-youth initiatives.
“She really loves the children,” Mr. Trump said.
The House narrowly voted Tuesday to clear the spending package, keeping most agencies funded through the remainder of the fiscal year.
But the Homeland Security Department is only funded through Feb. 13 as Democrats say they will not support a full-year appropriations bill without guardrails on Mr. Trump’s deportation force.
