President Trump on Tuesday threatened lawmakers with consequences in future campaigns if they vote against his top legislative priority, the SAVE America Act.
Mr. Trump said in a social media post that most people back provisions requiring proof of citizenship to vote and curtailing mail-in ballots. He also said a part of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act that would prevent biological males from participating in women’s sports is highly popular.
“Only sick, demented, or deranged people in the House or Senate could vote against THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” he posted. “If they do, each one of these points, separately, will be used against the [candidate] in his/her political campaign for office — A guaranteed loss!”
The House passed the bill in February mostly along party lines, but it faces a Democratic filibuster in the Senate, where Republicans hold 53 seats — short of the 60 votes needed to advance it.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune plans to hold a vote to proceed with debate on the bill this week.
Democratic leaders oppose the bill, saying it would curtail ballot access. They say some voters will not have ready access to a passport or birth certificate that proves their citizenship.
But Mr. Trump, who says his 2020 election loss was rigged, has made the bill his top domestic priority. He’s urged Republicans to override filibuster rules to get the legislation through the Senate on a majority vote.
Mr. Trump says the stakes are high ahead of this year’s midterm elections.
“The Save America Act is one of the most IMPORTANT & CONSEQUENTIAL pieces of legislation in the history of Congress, and America itself,” Mr. Trump posted. “NO MORE RIGGED ELECTIONS!”
