Trump plans to attend Supreme Court hearing on birthright citizenship

President Trump said he will make a rare appearance at the Supreme Court on Wednesday to attend oral arguments on a challenge to his executive order ending citizenship for children born to parents who do not have legal status in the U.S.

“I do believe I’m going,” Mr. Trump said Tuesday when speaking to reporters in the Oval Office. “I have listened to this argument for so long.”

The president criticized justices appointed by presidents of both parties. He lambasted those appointed by Democratic presidents, saying they always rule against Republicans while noting that the Republican-appointed justices also rule against him because they want to appear above politics.

“They want to show how honorable they are so a man can appoint them, and they can rule against him,” Mr. Trump said. “We’re so proud we’re above it.”

“But the Democrats never fail at one thing. When Barack Hussein Obama or when Biden appoints somebody, they go along that line,” he said of the Democratic-appointed justices.

The Supreme Court’s decision could upend the guarantee of birthright citizenship, which has been in effect since its 1898 ruling that extended citizenship to virtually anyone born in the U.S.

Trump administration lawyers argued that the 1898 ruling has been misinterpreted and only meant to include children of parents who were granted authorization to be in the U.S.
