Trump-owned golf course to host European Tour’s Scottish Championship

The European Tour is coming to a golf course owned by President Trump.

The Scottish Championship will be held at Trump International Golf Links Scotland from Aug. 7-10, tour organizers announced Tuesday.

The event will be the first European Tour competition on the course, one of the president’s two Scottish golf layouts alongside Trump Turnberry. His Aberdeen course will also host a tournament on the European Senior Tour, branded as the Legends Tour, this summer.

“This significant milestone reflects the hard work of our team and is a true testament to the exceptional golf and hospitality we deliver in Scotland,” Eric Trump, the president’s son and executive vice president of the Trump Organization, said in a statement.

Trump Turnberry, which made headlines after it was targeted by pro-Palestine vandals this year, occasionally hosts the British Open, one of golf’s four majors.

However, the tournament hasn’t returned to the site since 2009. The R&A, or the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St  Andrews, which organizes the major, said it would avoid the Trump-owned site “until we are convinced that the focus will be on the championship, the players and the course itself, and we do not believe that is achievable in the current circumstances,” then-CEO Martin Slumbers said on behalf of the R&A in 2021.

The group’s stance appeared to shift this year as it announced a feasibility study to return to the course.

“What we know for sure is the [Turnberry] golf course is brilliant, so at some point we’d love to be back there,” current R&A CEO Mark Darbon told British reporters last month.
