Trump moves to modernize the Defense Department procurement process

President Trump is aiming to modernize the Department of Defense by improving the procurement process and weapons sales to U.S. allies.

He also ordered a review of all current procurement programs to make sure the government isn’t being ripped off.

Mr. Trump said the process currently is “horrible.”

“That process is ridiculous, what they do. They get the highest price and not even good-looking equipment and we’re changing it to the best,” Mr. Trump said when signing the executive orders in the Oval Office. “So this is very important.”

A second order directed the Defense and State departments and other agencies to streamline the processes.

White House staff secretary Will Scharf, who handed the order to Mr. Trump for his signature, said it would “rework our system of foreign defense sales to ensure we can provide equipment, creating American jobs and providing revenue to American defense manufacturers, but provide key military equipment to our key allies in a reliable, effective way.”
