President Trump called for Roger Clemens to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, a day after playing golf with the former all-star pitcher and his son.
A seven-time Cy Young Award winner and two-time World Series champion, Clemens saw his public image tarnished by allegations that he used performance-enhancing drugs during his career, and he later lied about it in 2008 testimony before Congress.
“He should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, NOW!” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social. “People think he took drugs, but nothing was proven.”
“He never tested positive, and Roger, from the very beginning, totally denies it,” he said.
Mr. Trump likened Clemens’ exclusion from the Hall of Fame to Major League Baseball’s decision to grant entry into the Hall of Fame to Pete Rose, the all-time hits leader, only after his death.
“We are not going to let that happen in the case of Roger Clemens,” Mr. Trump said. “354 Wins — Put him in NOW. He and his great family should not be forced to endure this ‘stupidity’ any longer!”
Clemens played 24 years in the major leagues for the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Houston Astros.
