TikTok hit with power outage causing ‘cascading systems failure’

TikTok was grappling with technical difficulties Tuesday after a power outage at one of its data centers led to multiple bugs.

The outage happened Sunday, causing “a cascading systems failure,” the TikTok USDS Joint Venture account said on X. While the social media and video platform recovered, other technical issues continued.

“You may notice multiple bugs, slower load times or timed-out requests, including when posting new content. Creators may temporarily see ‘0’ views or likes on videos, and your earnings may look like they’re missing. This is a display error caused by server timeouts; your actual data and engagement are safe,” the TikTok USDS Joint Venture account said.

Users trying to post new content to the platform were still encountering errors as of Tuesday morning.

Others alleged that the app, now under majority U.S.-based ownership, is engaging in censorship of anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement or other political content. Some users reported having issues trying to send “Epstein” in personal messages, according to CNBC.

TikTok told CNBC that the name is not prohibited and that it’s investigating why the error message is showing up for people who try to use it, and that video footage of recent ICE incidents in Minnesota has been visible and available on the platform since Saturday.
