Three shootings on Maryland highways have cops still searching for suspect

Maryland State Police have a person of interest in custody after three highway shootings in Prince George’s County on Monday and Tuesday.

The police said they made the arrest as of 6:35 p.m. Tuesday, but did not say if the person was the suspect in the three incidents. The agency said “additional information will be issued pending further investigation.”

The first shooting happened at 10:35 p.m. Monday on Maryland State Route 5 near Allentown Road in Camp Springs. The victim’s car was struck by gunfire, though no injuries were reported, state police said in a release.

The second shooting happened nearby about 15 minutes later on Maryland State Route 5’s northbound ramp to get onto the outer loop of U.S. Interstate 495.

The second victim said a man was standing next to the driver’s side of a vehicle parked on the right shoulder and that the man opened fire. The second motorist also reported no injuries, state police said.

The third shooting happened at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday on I-495 going southbound near Ardwick Ardmore Road in Springdale. The third victim told police he was shot through his vehicle, and he ended up driving himself to the hospital for treatment.

The state police did not specify the nature or severity of the third motorist’s injury.

With the person of interest possibly not the shooter, the police are still searching for a suspect described as a Black man wearing a dark top and light-colored pants driving a red or burgundy sedan, possibly a Dodge Charger or Dodge Challenger, who police believe to be behind all three incidents.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Maryland State Police College Park Barracks at 301-345-3101.
