The ‘Both Sides’ Narrative Depends On Bovine Excrement – HotAir

People are citing “experts” and charts to assert that political violence is mainly a right-wing phenomenon.

No doubt you have seen the phony “statistic” that 94% of all political violence comes from the right, or perhaps the “body counts” that show that right-wingers have a larger death toll.

What they don’t tell you is how those statistics are generated. What is put in, what is left out, the time frames, etc.

For instance, one count of deaths from political violence conveniently excludes September 11th, but goes back to 1975 and includes the Oklahoma City bombing. Others include gang violence in prisons, as if the fights between black nationalist and white nationalist gangs are really political violence at all.

I mean, c’mon. Does anybody think a conflict between a neo-Nazi gang and Black Muslim Nationalists is really political violence from the right?

But as I was thinking about all the storm and strife, the propaganda, and the whataboutisms, two things kept coming back to me: first, and most obviously, the determination to gloss over the fact that only one side actively CELEBRATES the terrorists who commit the violence, and we all know which side that is; and secondly, the determination to exclude the violent attacks against ICE, the police, ordinary citizens, and the damage done through riots that the Democrats cheer on.

It would be ridiculous to deny that some right-wingers engage in violence. People from all walks of life, religions, and ideologies are capable of violence and commit it. That is a given.

What is more significant is who actually celebrates, advocates, and justifies the violence of their compatriots. And to that, the obvious answer is the left. So many leftists felt certain that celebrating an assassination would be applauded by their peers that they took to social media to dance in joy or lecture us on the justification for Kirk’s murder, that it became a point of national conversation.

When people point to the Gabby Giffords shooting–which was horrific–as an example of right-wing violence, my first thought after praying for Gabby is that everybody else was appalled, too. No prominent conservatives jumped for joy.

On the other hand, liberals complained that Thomas Matthew Crooks really needed to practice his shooting skills more. We all saw it, just as we see the hit lists on Bluesky, and think about how Luigi Mangione was turned into a cultural icon. We saw the late-night comics laughing about murders, and even openly wishing for the death of conservatives (I am looking at you, Jimmy Kimmel). We’ve all watched liberals say the inevitable “I don’t approve of violence, but…” when discussing the murder of innocents.

And we have seen the endorsement of riots and even “experts” claiming that looting, burning down cities, attacking police officers, and taking over blocks of cities is “Public Health.”

“Summer of love,” and all that.

Conservatives use the American Flag as their preferred symbol. Liberals wave the raised fist. They speak darkly of “existential threats,” Nazism, fascism, and putting black people back in chains. They say things like ,”What did you think decolonization looked like?” when terrorists murder over a thousand Jews.

The point? The perpetrators may indeed come from both sides of the aisle, although I would argue that when you add in the riots and justification of crimes, the left has a larger body count. But whatever. What really matters when discussing the politics of violence is the fact that the left celebrates and encourages the violence. They bend the knee, talk from podiums about “uprisings” and “getting in the streets,” and use terms like “By any means necessary.”

Most liberals have friends who have told them, or posted on social media, that they think Charlie Kirk deserved to be shot. They tell pollsters that they think political violence is justified–over half of Democrats told pollsters that Trump deserved to be assassinated, and a full quarter told YouGov that violence is necessary to bring about political change.

There is no roughly equitable contest of sides, each with its own dangerous extremists. It is not, for example, Northern Ireland of a generation past. Instead, we are in a contest in which one side overwhelmingly reserves violence to itself and employs it freely.

That side is, of course, the Left.

The examples of the Left’s frequent recourse to terror, mayhem, and death abound. There is formally extralegal violence, which includes the murder of Kirk, the transgender killers of small children, the deliberate creation of insecure common spaces in which assaults and deaths occur, the murders of Jews in public, shooters targeting conservative organizations, and the various attempts to kill conservative presidents, Supreme Court justices, and congressmen. There is also regime-sanctioned mass violence—most significantly the Black Lives Matter insurrection during the summer of 2020. Additionally, there are varieties of formal and networked repression, from government-imposed pandemic restrictions and iniquitous racial/ethnic preferentialism to societally enforced cancel culture and speech codes.

It is worth noting that this is not especially incisive or contrarian analysis: everyone knows it. Everyone knows that the Left is the violent faction in American public life today. Everyone knows that shop windows were boarded up in November 2020 out of fear of the Left’s reaction to the election, not the Right’s. Everyone knows there is no threat to public order in response to the murder of Charlie Kirk as there was after the death of George Floyd. Everyone knows that a gathering of pro-Palestinians carries with it a high potential for violence, but a gathering of pro-Israel partisans does not. Everyone knows there is a national network of street fighters on the Left, not on the Right. Everyone knows that colleges have to worry about security for conservative events, not leftist ones.

Everyone knows.

We have days of “vengeance” advertised by the left. We hear justifications of Antifa.

It’s all of a piece

Dueling statistics are a distraction. A huge chunk of the liberals’ movement is openly advocating for and celebrating violence. That is simply not true on the right. And literally everybody knows that, whatever they say.
