Tesla winding down production of its Model S and Model X cars to make more robots

Electric carmaker Tesla said Thursday that it is phasing out production of its Model S and Model X cars over the next quarter.

“Model S & X production will wind down next quarter. If you’d like to own one of them, now’s a good time to place your order. Tesla wouldn’t be what it is today without Model S & X and their (early) owners – thank you for your support over the last decade,” Tesla said on X.

The Model S costs $95,000 while a Model X goes for $100,000, according to CNBC.

The Model S is a sedan, while the Model X is a crossover. Neither car is fully autonomous, and Mr. Musk said on an earnings call Wednesday that their production facility would be geared toward making robots instead, as the company focuses on more autonomous vehicles.

“It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy. … we’re going to take the Model S and X production space in our Fremont factory and convert that into an Optimus factory … with the long-term goal of having 1 million units a year of Optimus robots,” Mr. Musk said, as transcribed by Seeking Alpha.

Mr. Musk also said on the call that customer support for the Model S and Model X will continue as long as people own either type of car. The Model S was first rolled out in 2012 and the Model X in 2015, but in recent years the company shifted focus to its Model 3 and Model Y cars, according to The Verge.
