Teacher at Virginia middle school arrested, accused of throwing shoe at student

A special education teacher in Woodbridge, Virginia, was arrested this week over accusations she threw a shoe at a student last month.

Delia Pruitte, 37, a special education teacher at Rippon Middle School, was arrested Monday by the Prince William County Police Department and charged with a single count of assault and battery.

Police allege she was speaking to the victim, an 11-year-old boy, on Dec. 17 when she took off her shoe, threw it and hit him in the hand, causing a minor injury.

The alleged incident was caught on surveillance camera, Prince William County Police Lt. Jonathan Perok told WTOP.

The police did not name the student involved. Ms. Pruitte was released on court summons, police said. Her court date is pending.

Prince William County Public Schools told Maryland’s WDVM-TV that she has been placed on leave.

“We are committed to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for every student and do not believe this isolated incident is reflective of the great work accomplished at our school on a daily basis,” Rippon Middle School Principal Kristan Donahue said in a letter to families, according to WDVM.
