Suspected burglar foiled by Florida man in Batman pajamas

Call him the Cape Coral Crusader.

A Southwest Florida man in Batman pajamas stopped a suspected burglar accused of stealing from his truck and a neighbor’s garage, then detained him until cops came.

At around 2:03 a.m. Wednesday, Kyle Myvett was in bed clad as the Caped Crusader when his home security system alerted him that someone was breaking into his truck, the Cape Coral Police Department said in a release.

Mr. Myvett went outside and saw the suspect going through his truck, then into his neighbor’s garage.

The would-be Batman leaped into action and detained Justin Schimpl, 20, police said.

“I got a hold of their shirt and their right wrist, and I told him, I said, listen, don’t try to get away. I’m really glad I had my Batman pajamas on because that gave me the extra confidence I needed,” Mr. Myvett told Miami’s WSVN.

Mr. Schimpl is accused of burglarizing Mr. Myvett’s truck and the garage.

Police said Mr. Schimpl claimed that another man was also involved, but the other man’s name changed multiple times over the course of police questioning. Neither the police nor the Lee County Sheriff’s Office found any other suspects in the area.

Detectives determined that Mr. Schimpl took cash, more than $500 in gift cards, two pairs of Ray-Ban sunglasses, each worth $30,0 and a woman’s wristlet, the police said.

Authorities charged Mr. Schimpl with two counts of unarmed burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, a third-degree felony; one count of burglary of an occupied dwelling, a second-degree felony; and two counts of petit theft under $750, a first-degree misdemeanor.
