Suspect in Custody) – HotAir

If you’ve followed this from the beginning, you already know that someone was arrested at the scene of the shooting. That older man was seen being escorted out of the area by police officers. However, later reports indicated he was not the shooter.

Utah Valley University officials confirmed that no one had been arrested. “There is no suspect in custody, it is an active investigation,” Ellen Treanor, a university spokesperson, said in a statement. The university said four agencies are investigating the shooting: Orem Police, Utah Valley University Police, the F.B.I. and the Utah Department of Public Safety.

So the shooter is still at large. One obvious question is how this happened. Where was the shooter located and what type of weapon was used. It now appears clear that the weapon was some type of rifle. The shooter is believed to have fired from a nearby building some 200 yards away.

A spokeswoman for the university said the shooter fired at Mr. Kirk from the Losee Center, a building about 200 yards away.

The gunman is not yet in custody. The school originally said that the shooter had been taken into custody, but police determined that the person they had detained was not the gunman.

There is video of someone who appears to be lying prone on the roof of the building.

There is additional video which seems to come from the seconds after the shot was fired. This is looking out a window from behind where Kirk was speaking. As the camera pans right, you see people crouching down, reacting to the shot. If you look near the top of the frame, you can see someone running along the roof.

Here’s a still from that clip showing the person on the roof. And below that is a reverse angle showing the view from the roof looking down onto the field.

Here’s a graphic showing where the buildings are located.

Just a few minutes ago (as I write this) FBI Director Kash Patel announced a suspect was in custody.

A press conference was just held with local officials and the FBI. They confirmed that the person taken into custody earlier today was not the shooter. However that person has been charged with obstruction. The suspect that Director Patel referred to in his tweet above is being described as a person of interest. Police also confirmed that the shot came from the roof and that their review of security video shows a person in dark clothing on the roof. So that person seen in the videos above is the shooter. What we don’t know, yet, is if that is the same person who is now in custody.

Here’s new video of someone being arrested off campus. The person filming says they had a rifle. You’ll see a police officer carrying it.

Obviously after a shooting police are on high alert. This arrest could be unrelated and just a coincidence. Images of the gun in question. Some commenters are saying it looks like a pellet or a .22 air rifle. I can’t tell.

Since the first arrest was not the correct guy, best to wait for confirmation before assuming this is him. Someone is in custody but it may not be this guy. We’ll know more soon. I’ll update below if I see anything confirmed.
