Steny Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, to retire from Congress: Report

Rep. Steny Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, will reportedly announce his retirement from Congress on Thursday.

Mr. Hoyer’s impending retirement was first reported Wednesday evening by Politico.

The 86-year-old Mr. Hoyer has been in the House since 1981, representing a district that includes Washington’s eastern suburbs and Southern Maryland.

He rose to the No. 2 slot in the Democratic caucus, behind Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, becoming majority leader when Democrats held the majority and she was speaker and, then, minority leader when they didn’t.

He stepped back from his leadership roles in 2022, alongside Mrs. Pelosi, to make way for a younger generation of party leaders.

Politico’s report was based on “two people who were granted anonymity to confirm the news ahead of a public announcement.”
