The U.S. Secret Service said shots were fired early Sunday in Lafayette Park just north of the White House.
Agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said no one was injured in the incident that happened shortly after midnight.
Authorities said no suspect was taken into custody after a search in the park and the surrounding blocks.
The Secret Service said it is looking for a person of interest and a vehicle in connection to the gunfire. Metropolitan Police and U.S. Park Police are assisting in the investigation.
President Trump was staying in the White House at the time of the shooting, officials said. Mr. Guglielmi said security has been upped in light of the incident.
