Sen. Tim Sheehy, Montana Republican and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, delivered a keynote address during the “Golden Dome for America” event hosted by Threat Status on May 13, 2025, at the Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City, in Arlington, Va.
I believe Golden Dome is a mandate we have to pursue.
I believe we’re entering the most challenging geopolitical period in the history of our country. World War II was, of course, incredibly challenging for everybody, but the truth is this is a more complex landscape than the geopolitical tectonic plates that threatened us in that era.
I think that the variability of threats, the ferocity of our adversaries, and the strength of non-state actors through different types of technology, be it economic warfare, cybersecurity, cyber insecurity, or offensive cyber tools, we are facing a far more complex threat matrix than we’ve ever seen before as a country.
And I think the concept of Golden Dome is something we have to pursue. We have to pursue it with vigor. And we also have to recognize that our current defense acquisition system is insufficient to build to this threat.
How we buy obsolete hardware and field obsolete hardware by the time it’s in the hands of warfighters is not going to work with this structure.
That’s why I’m announcing today the formation of the Golden Dome caucus in the U.S. Senate because I think a project of this scope, like we saw in the Apollo program and the Manhattan Project, it’s going to require a far more close relationship between the appropriators, the DOD, our legislators, and industry to ensure that this project isn’t just built, but it evolves with the threat in real time.
