As the annual March for Life drew thousands of pro-life supporters to the capital on Friday, lawmakers demanded renewed restrictions on abortion drugs.
“This is the time, now more than ever, not to back away, not to go silent, not to drop the flag or allow it to droop, but to stand tall for life,” Sen. Josh Hawley, Missouri Republican, said.
Anti-abortion members of Congress have recently demanded that the Food and Drug Administration restore its previous safeguards, removed by Democratic administrations, for chemical abortion drugs.
Mifepristone and misoprostol are the most widely used abortion drugs, which can be received through telehealth appointments or mail orders.
They can be prescribed only by certified prescribers and are dispensed in person or by mail, even to states that prohibit abortion via an abortion-inducing drug.
Mr. Hawley is among the Republicans urging the Trump administration to reimpose the restrictions on mifepristone.
“We want to protect life, and we want to give voice to the American people and their right to protect life, state by state, city by city and, yes, here in the United States Congress,” Mr. Hawley said. “That’s what this fight is about.”
Vice President J.D. Vance, who recently announced he and his wife are expecting their fourth child, said at the event that those marching have an ally in the White House.
Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, voiced his gratitude for the “steadfast voices across the country who share in our mission to defend the sanctity of life.”
Two other Republican senators, Katie Britt of Alabama and Jim Justice of West Virginia, echoed that sentiment.
“God bless the folks from every corner of this great country coming together in our nation’s capital for the March for Life,” Mr. Justice said. “Life is a precious gift, and we all should do everything we can to protect the unborn.”
