Police responding to active shooter alert at Florida State University’s Tallahassee campus

Authorities said a suspect is in custody and at least six people were hospitalized Thursday after an active shooter rampaged through Florida State University.

Tallahassee police said one person was arrested in connection with the shooting, according to NBC News. The suspect’s identity was not shared.

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said it was treating six people who came from the scene. CNN reported that one of those people was critically injured, while the other five were seriously hurt.

“Our prayers are with our FSU family and state law enforcement is actively responding,” Gov. Ron DeSantis wrote on X.

FSU locked down its campus after the university said a shooting erupted near the Student Union building at about noon.

Students inside the Student Union told WCTV they heard about 15-20 gunshots before fleeing for safety at a church across the street.

“Police are on scene or on the way,” FSU said in an alert. “Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”

The FBI is assisting authorities at the university, an agency spokesperson told ABC News.
