New Jersey police partner with Lamborghini to raise awareness about opioids

Police in a New Jersey town partnered with a Lamborghini dealer to put department decals on a car with a QR code that connects people to opioid treatment and support.

The Garfield Police Department, 18 miles northwest of New York City, is working with the Lamborghini Paramus dealership on the “Outrun Opioids” initiative.

Department decals with the code were put on a 2023 Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato, along with a logo for Garfield High School’s sports teams.

The QR code on the Italian luxury sports car links to a tool powered by a local organization, the Center for Alcohol and Drug Resources, that offers people help with opioid support and treatment, the police said.

The Garfield Police Department does not own the car and did not pay for the decals.

“This initiative comes at no cost to the taxpayers of the City of Garfield. While we would certainly welcome a vehicle of this caliber in our fleet, its cost — $309,895 — is far beyond our current budget. The vehicle remains the property of Lamborghini Paramus. They have generously committed to bringing it to us for community events and Department functions as needed,” the Garfield Police Department said in a statement.

The decorated Lamborghini was first displayed on Thursday at a toy drive in Closter, 14 miles from Garfield. The car will continue making public appearances at other community events through June.

On Facebook, Garfield Mayor Everett Garnto Jr. said, “Using a vehicle of this visibility to shine a light on opioid prevention, and directly connecting people to immediate help through a live 24/7 navigator, is a powerful example of thinking outside the box to save lives.”
