Rep. Nancy Pelosi tore into President Trump as a “vile creature” during an interview on CNN Monday night.
“He’s just a vile creature. The worst thing on the face of the Earth,” the California Democrat told Elex Michaelson.
Asked to explain, the former House speaker said, “Because he’s the president of the United States, and he does not honor the Constitution of the United States. In fact, he’s turned the Supreme Court into a rogue court. He’s abolished the House of Representatives. He’s chilled the press. He’s scared people who are in our country legally.”
Mrs. Pelosi and Mr. Trump have clashed frequently. The president has called her “crazy” and “sick” in response to her saying he’s “dangerous” and “evil” in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, protest at the U.S. Capitol.
The CNN interview was centered around California’s Proposition 50, a measure on Tuesday’s ballot that would redraw the state’s congressional lines. This plan would give Democrats a leg up in next year’s midterm elections, as other states, including Texas, are redrawing their maps in hopes of gaining GOP seats in the House.
Mrs. Pelosi also called House Speaker Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican, a “puppet.”
The 85-year-old lawmaker, who is reportedly considering retirement when her term ends in January 2027, said she won’t decide until after Tuesday’s election whether to run again.
She said she has “no doubt” she would win another term if she announced her candidacy.
“That isn’t even a question,” she said. “It isn’t arrogant; it’s competent. I know my district.”
Her Democratic primary challengers include state Sen. Scott Wiener and Saikat Chakrabarti, a former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Democrat.
Mrs. Pelosi said she is more focused on ensuring Democrats win back the House “to protect us from the poison of the Trump administration.”
When asked if her disdain for the president inspires her to stay in office, she deflected, saying she wants to “win big” on Proposition 50.
