Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health is back in the spotlight this week after he checked himself into a hospital with flu-like symptoms.
According to his office, the 83‑year‑old Kentucky Republican was admitted Monday night “in an abundance of caution.”
“His prognosis is positive, and he is grateful for the excellent care he is receiving,” McConnell spokesman David Popp said in a statement Tuesday night. “He is in regular contact with his staff and looks forward to returning to Senate business.”
His office didn’t have anything new to add on Wednesday, saying only that they’ll share an update when they can.
Mr. McConnell announced around this time last year that he wouldn’t seek re‑election, marking the beginning of the end of his long run on Capitol Hill.
He’s the longest‑serving Senate party leader in U.S. history. He has served in the Senate since 1985.
Over the past year, he’s had a few falls, which have only heightened public concerns about his overall fitness — worries that have been building since he froze in public twice in 2023.
