Mass Stabbing in Traverse City, MI Last Evening Stopped by Good Guy With Gun – HotAir

It sounded like the Walmart in Traverse City, MI, was packed last night about 5:00 or so, when, for some reason, all hell broke loose in the worst way.

Witnesses described a chaotic and horrifying scene inside the store, with panicked customers and employees running in all directions after a man armed with a knife began attacking shoppers at random in various departments.

The scene inside the store was chaotic, terrifying, and bloody, according to witnesses.

But there were heroes in the crowd.

…Walmart employees confirmed that no shots were fired during the incident. Tasha Nash, who works at the store, stated, “Me and my sister work there. The whole store started screaming and running. There was a guy with a knife—he stabbed six people. I saw someone stabbed in the eye.”

Amber Paull reported seeing a man she described as “a foreign guy” randomly attack people in the produce section. “An African American man pulled a hero move and drew his pistol to try and stop him,” she said. “But then people screamed, and employees shouted for everyone to run, and the suspect slipped away into the crowd.”

When word first broke of the ongoing attacks in the store, the video of the police response was overwhelming when it arrived.

It turns out, the first responders were too late.

Thanks to two good men and the fellows who bravely backed them up, the situation was under control, and the creature who’d done this unthinkable thing wasn’t going to hurt another soul.

Citizens had already chased the knife-wielding psycho from the store while others rendered aid to his victims.

…A woman, who was at the Walmart with her fiancé when the attack happened, said bystanders were comforting two of the people stabbed as other customers chased the attacker out of the store and eventually held him in the parking lot until first responders arrived.

“It was just very panicky, very scary,” said Angela Helfrich. “I’ve never witnessed anything like that, and I’ve lived in Traverse City my whole life. I was way too close. That could have been me or my family, and I feel awful for all the victims and their families.”

In a classic, glorious display of instinctive, toxic masculinity, two strangers worked together to nail the savage.

It’s a beautiful thing.

All hail Derrick and Matthew.

As the community of Traverse City reels from Saturday’s horrifying mass stabbing at the Walmart Supercenter, the stories of courage and selflessness shown by everyday citizens are emerging—shedding light on the heroic actions that may have saved countless lives.

Among those recognized are Derrick Perry and Matthew K., two men now credited with confronting and helping to apprehend the 42-year-old suspect after he attacked 11 people inside the store.

…Matthew K., a U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Kent City, Michigan, was visiting Traverse City with his family on vacation.

…Acting on instinct and military training, he instructed his daughter to stay back, then used a nearby shopping cart to strike the attacker in the Achilles tendon, causing the suspect to fall forward.

“Matthew didn’t hesitate,” a witness said. “He went into ‘Marine mode’ and neutralized the threat.”

At that same moment, Derrick Perry, another shopper, reportedly drew his legally-owned firearm and ordered the suspect to drop the knife.

The suspect complied after realizing he was surrounded, and several other shoppers joined in, tackling and restraining him until police arrived moments later.

“He [Derrick] risked his life to save many others,” one post stated. “He is truly a hero.”

There are two great pictures from this incident, one of Derrick’s weapon about a foot and a half from the sumbitch’s head…

…and the other (in the linked story) with the perp on the deck, and Matthew’s finger in his chest as he’s yelling in full Marine Corps battle mode. That’s him in the purple shirt above with the finger already out, pointing TO the deck. I can imagine what he’s telling the knifeman.

Full credit to the tight group who backed these guys up, too. There was no skittering away in that crowd. This assault on innocent shoppers and the horror was not going to stand if any of them could help it.

Governor Whitmer thanked first responders. I’m going to be charitable and assume she hadn’t heard about the courageous Americans who did the actual work of stopping the carnage before first cars of responders even pulled in the parking lot.

And then another Traverse City resident shivered in revulsion and offered his thoughts and prayers.

…Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said in a statement, “Along with the whole Traverse City community, Chasten and I are shaken by the awful and senseless violence at Walmart earlier today. We’re thinking of everyone affected and hoping and praying for speedy recovery for all those who were injured.”

Curiously, here we are all these hours later, and all we know about the man with the knife is his age and that he is a ‘Michigan man.’

A chaotic and tragic scene unfolded Saturday afternoon at the Walmart Supercenter on Crossing Circle in Traverse City, Michigan, when a knife-wielding man carried out a mass stabbing that left 11 victims hospitalized, several critically injured.

The suspect, a 42-year-old Michigan man, is in custody following a swift response by both law enforcement and brave civilians — including an armed citizen who confronted the attacker inside the store.

I mean, what does that even mean over twelve hours later?

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have not released the suspect’s name pending further investigation.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has reportedly been notified, and local law enforcement agencies are working to determine whether the attack was premeditated or random in nature.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage is urged to contact Grand Traverse County authorities or Crime Stoppers as the investigation continues.

This seems unnecessarily obstructive and, frankly, inflammatory. We all have eyes, sir.

It is best to share information as you have it, because people will ascribe intent even more willy-nilly, knowing that it’s being withheld purposefully.

Particularly when it’s already been announced that the FBI is assisting and the bureau has confirmed it.

Why we repeat this same obvious blunder over and over, I have no idea. It does nothing but lead to rampant speculation and even more frenzied searches once a name is revealed, as the wondering over what’s been hidden or wiped spirals out of control.

It seems so dumb.

In any event, I am here to offer my fervent best wishes for the quick recovery of the grievously wounded. May their doctors be skilled and their healing, physical and mental, be both thorough and swift.

I also raise a hearty toast to real men this Sunday morning. Those lovely, most toxic of Americans, large, medium, and small, black, white, brown, whatever color, who don’t hesitate to charge in where angels fear to tread when the right thing needs to be done.

God bless you guys. It’s awfully good to see you.
