Kavan Markwood. fan who fell 21 feet at Pittsburgh Pirates game, able to take steps

Kavan Markwood, the 20-year-old fan who fell 21 feet onto the field at a baseball game in Pittsburgh last week, on Monday took his first steps since the accident.

Mr. Markwood first woke up Saturday and was alert and able to speak. He suffered a fractured skull and broken neck, collarbone and back from the fall, according to a GoFundMe created by his girlfriend’s mother, and is on the road back to mobility.

“Kav took his first steps today! It’s a slow slow process, but seeing him up and moving was a huge win and definitely lifted everyone’s spirits. … He’s showing real strength, and we’re staying hopeful for a smooth recovery,” GoFundMe organizer Jennifer Phillips, the girlfriend’s mom, said in an update on the fundraiser page.

On Wednesday, Mr. Markwood fell from PNC Park’s Clemente Wall, which has 3-foot-high railings, while celebrating an ultimately game-winning seventh-inning double from Pirates designated hitter Andrew McCutchen. The former college football player was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition.

Mr. Markwood’s fall is being investigated by police as an accident.

As of Tuesday, the fundraiser had received $43,250 toward its $50,000 goal.
