Jasmine Crockett inches toward Senate bid against John Cornyn in Texas

Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett is moving close to a Senate campaign, meeting with a potential campaign manager and preparing to poll ahead of the 2026 election.

Ms. Crockett wants to join the race to replace Republican Sen. John Cornyn, she said in the latest episode of “The Conversation” with Politico.

“I am seriously weighing it, to the extent that I’m about to spend a lot of money to get data,” she said.

The congresswoman said she and the unnamed potential campaign manager discussed her chances in a general election against the field of Republicans gearing up for next year’s primary.

Ms. Crockett, who first entered Congress in 2023, would face off against state Rep. James Talarico and former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred in the Democratic primary.

Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt joined the Senate race this month, with the incumbent, Mr. Cornyn, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also in the hunt for the GOP nomination.

“The primary is the primary. That’s cool, but you got to win the general,” Ms. Crockett said last week on SiriusXM’s “The Lurie Daniel Favors Show.” “So we are doing some testing here shortly to see if I can expand the electorate.”

She remarked that Mr. Cornyn would be a stronger challenge than Mr. Paxton or Mr. Hunt.

The Washington Times has reached out to Ms. Crockett’s office for comment.

Texas Republicans pushed through a mid-cycle redistricting map that moved Ms. Crockett out of her own district.
