It’s a Trap! – HotAir

A few liberals understand just how dangerous the automatic opposition to anything Trump does is political poison.

Not many, but a few. Let’s hope that the numbers don’t grow.

The latest 80-20 issue that the Democrats chose the wrong side of is, of course, crime. Americans’ concern about crime is analogous to their concern about illegal immigration. It isn’t just a problem in and of itself–it is a big one, of course, for many reasons–but also a sign of societal decline that scares Americans to the core.

Most people understand that statistically speaking, they are unlikely to be murdered, but they also understand that a society in which murder has become normalized is dying. It’s the same with porous borders, through which foreign criminals enter the country to collect welfare, free housing, and medical care, all while committing heinous crimes, taking over apartment buildings, and selling drugs.

We may not live in those apartment buildings or be tempted to ingest fentanyl, but we also know that society is being degraded and will ultimately collapse if the trend is not reversed. It’s the same with homelessness, shoplifting, riots, people marching in the streets calling for Sharia law and dead jews.

Democrats defend all of that, partly out of principle, but also out of spite directed at Trump and his supporters. If it hurts us, it must be good.

Democrats should be looking forward to a blue wave, based solely on the fact that parties out of power gain seats in off years. But the Democrats are sabotaging themselves to spite the president.

Even Morning Joe and his panel can see this.

The funny thing is that Scarborough and company are not Admiral Akbar discovering an actual trap. As much as I believe that Trump is a genius at trolling the opposition, he is not inflicting the wounds in many of these cases.

Democrats could pick and choose their fights, and crime is an obvious one to side with Trump rather than oppose him. Trump only laid a trap in the sense that he did something sensible and the Democrats cannot stand agreeing with him.

To the extent that Trump’s fighting crime is a trap, it is a minefield that the Democrats laid that has trapped them. Trump did nothing to make the Democrats oppose him. They could have shut up, made noises about methods and not goals, or even endorsed what he is doing.

But they cannot do that, and that is their fault. They have decided that calling Trump a dictator is their main tactic, which means they must oppose him in everything. This has nothing to do with policy and is extraordinarily bad politics, but they are caught in a trap of their own making.

Hatred is the core message of the Democrats. It need not have been, but the course was set in 2016, and they cannot or will not deviate from it. They will lie, commit hoaxes, break laws, mobilize the FBI, CIA, and whatever military people they can find to destroy Donald Trump.

In the process, they are destroying themselves as a political party.

Make no mistake: Democrats can win elections in swing districts still, but only if Trump fails so badly that people will vote for anything else. The Tories in the UK managed the impossible–making Keir Starmer an acceptable alternative, at least until people saw what he and his party really are.

Which is the flip side of the Democrats’ perils. It’s not that they won’t be able to get temporary victories, but that in the process, they are destroying their longer-term viability. Both the Conservatives and Labour are on life support. Reform is now the most popular party in the UK, and they have done that by pursuing a modified Trumpism.

Republicans are wrong to believe that the current unpopularity of the Democrats dooms their 2026 prospects–it may, or it may not. But they are right to believe that without a radical course change, the Democrats’ long-term prospects are very bad.

Gavin Newsom’s attempt to out-Trump Trump is a perfect metaphor for the party at the moment. Tone deaf and self-defeating. And he is one of their better prospects. He is at least a faker, unlike AOC or Mamdani. When that is the best you have, you are in trouble.
