House Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday he has postponed his trip to Israel to speak to the Knesset, due to the war that has erupted with Iran.
“Due to the complex situation currently unfolding in Iran and Israel, Speaker Ohana and I have made the decision to postpone the special session of the Knesset,” said Mr. Johnson, Louisiana Republican. “We look forward to rescheduling the address in the near future and send our prayers to the people of Israel and the Middle East.”
Mr. Johnson’s remarks before the Israeli parliament, scheduled for Sunday, would have likely happened as Iran and Israel are broadening their attacks against one another.
On the fourth night of the conflict, Israel struck Iran’s state television station during a broadcast and said it had eliminated about a third of Iran’s missile launchers. Iran hit an Israeli oil refinery and damaged some of the power grid. There have been numerous fatalities and injuries on both sides.
Mr. Johnson is hoping to be the third House speaker to address Israel’s legislature, following Newt Gingrich and Kevin McCarthy, both Republicans.
