Hakeem Jeffries slams ‘extremists’ for saying more funds could be needed to fight Iran

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries slammed the idea of Congress providing additional funding to bolster America’s munitions supply amid the bombing of Iran.

Mr. Jeffries, New York Democrat, acknowledged to reporters Tuesday that a discussion about the possible need for supplemental funding for more munitions came up during the Gang of Eight briefing with administration officials Monday, when they shared information about Operation Epic Fury.

“But the nerve of these extremists to want to raise the possibility of coming to Congress for supplemental funding related to a war that we haven’t even authorized yet,” he said. “So, we’re not there.”

He also said the briefing provided “zero evidence” that there was an imminent threat of an attack from Iran on the U.S.

“It’s hard for the American people to understand the rationale from launching a preemptive war in the Middle East that has now spread to more than half a dozen countries and resulted in the death of at least six brave, courageous, heroic service members,” he said. “That’s unacceptable.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican, told reporters Monday after the briefing that appropriators brought up the topic of additional funding, but “it could be some time before” any decisions are made.

However, President Trump said late Monday that the U.S. has a healthy supply of munitions.

“The United States Munitions Stockpiles have, at the medium and upper medium grade, never been higher or better — as was stated to me today, we have a virtually unlimited supply of these weapons,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social.

“Wars can be fought ’forever’ and very successfully using just these supplies (which are better than other countries finest arms!),” he wrote. “At the highest end, we have a good supply, but not where we want to be. Much additional high-grade weaponry is stored for us in outlying countries.”

He went on to slam former President Biden for draining the supply.

The post came as pushback against Wall Street Journal reporting that said the U.S. was racing to destroy Iran’s supply before the American military runs out of munitions.
