Friday’s Final Word – HotAir

When you’ve only got 100 tabs to close …

Ed: They want people to die. It’s as simple as that. They want people to die to generate enough outrage for The Glorious Revolution to fully launch, after it sputtered out in the “Summer of Love” in 2020. And this week, they got their wish in Minneapolis.

===

WSJ: Local prosecutors in Minnesota are seeking evidence from the fatal shooting of a woman by an ICE agent as they weigh their next steps in response to the incident, which has heightened tensions between state officials and the Trump administration.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty on Friday asked residents to submit videos, photos and eyewitness accounts of the shooting and the events leading up to it. Moriarty challenged Vice President JD Vance’s comments where he claimed the agent who killed Renee Nicole Good had “absolute immunity” from criminal charges.

“The ICE officer does not have complete immunity here,” Moriarty said.

Ed: The proper legal response to this is “piss off.” Moriarty has no jurisdiction in cases involving federal law enforcement acting in their capacity under federal law, and she knows it. Given that both the mayor of the city and the governor of the state declared the agent guilty already, Minnesota has no moral standing to demand to be part of the due process of an investigation. They corrupted the process already.

===

Ed: A former law enforcement officer is endorsing the murders of law enforcement officers. On the plus side, at least he’s endorsing the Second Amendment.

Alpha News: With regard to the shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer and the presumption of innocence, Madel said it is one of the key principles and constitutional guarantees afforded to all U.S. citizens.

“This is one of the things that makes America so great. We don’t just put these things in words on paper. We actually follow them. We actually believe in them,” Madel said. “When our elected leaders don’t do that … they just follow the pitchforks and the torches.”

Reacting to recent press conferences about the ICE shooting, and the remarks of Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Madel explained how this seems like history is repeating itself.

“Honestly, I feel like I’m reliving a lot of that again,” Madel said, referring to the Londregan case.

Ed: This is the same pattern, by the same person – Mary Moriarty. I wrote about the Londregan case in 2024 when Moriarty was forced to withdraw the indictment, wondering, “Has Sanity Returned to Minneapolis?” The answer is: sadly, no. Moriarty wants to railroad the ICE agent exactly how she attempted to railroad Londregan. Madel successfully defended Londregan, and he’s also reaching the same conclusion about sanity in Minnesota.

… and the license plate of the vehicle.

He only moves from the passenger side around the front of the vehicle — where he had already been once — when he sees another ICE office approaching the driver’s door.

So this is his second time walking around the front — and he maintains an amount of space between him and the vehicle — with nothing having happened the first time, and the driver looking directly at him and engaging with him verbally.

She did not panic.  She was PURPOSELY trying to evade contact with the second ICE officer approaching her door.

She was attempting to escape what she was anticipating to be an effort to arrest her.

Ed: Yes, and this negates the claim that the ICE officer purposefully put himself in front of the car so he could shoot the driver. The more distant surveillance video showed the same thing – he was circling around to support the agent at the driver’s side door that was ordering Good out of the vehicle. The video also clearly shows Good looking directly at the agent and driving forward in at least reckless disregard of his life and safety in order to escape.

Chad Pergram at Fox (on Twitter): House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) sidestepped my question when I asked him about using appropriations to undercut ICE.

“Our focus right now, in terms of the appropriations bill, are getting the three bills that are going to be on the floor today over the finish line, and then we’ll turn to the Homeland Security,” said Jeffries.

I pressed further about ICE and DHS funding. “No, what I’m focused on right now, Chad, is to make life better for the American people,” said an angry Jeffries.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is in a similar boat.

“I have lots of problems with ICE,” said Schumer

“Why is there resistance to use the appropriations process, either for Venezuela or now certainly for ICE? I mean, are you afraid of another government shutdown?” I asked. Schumer ignored the question.

Even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) gave Jeffries and Schumer some slack on not taking up the cause to handcuff ICE through the appropriations process.

Ed: I didn’t use the embed feature here because I’d have had to paste this anyway. It does not appear that Democrats on Capitol Hill really want a fight over ICE funding, especially in the form of a shutdown. That speaks volumes about the way this incident is being perceivd by the American public. It’s a loser for Dems, and they are slowly realizing it.

===

Ed: Exactly. The new videos expose the absurdity of these arguments. Chicago’s police chief rebutted them angrily and succinctly yesterday, too.

Salena Zito at WashEx: Last year, an arsonist attempted to kill Shapiro and his family by firebombing the governor’s residence, setting the home ablaze, and causing extensive damage. Shapiro, his wife, their children, and other family members narrowly escaped the rapidly spreading flames.

Shapiro has said the attack prompted serious conversations with his wife about whether he should seek reelection.

“I think a couple of days after that, my primary focus was on being a good dad and a good husband and being a good governor. And I have tried very, very hard to both heal myself and be there for my kids as they work through this and be there for Laurie,” he said of his wife, who was with him at the beginning of the interview.

Shapiro admits there were many family discussions on what they should do.

“We had a long talk about whether we wanted to keep doing this in the face of that kind of attack and that kind of threat,” he said. “The reality is we all ended up in the exact same place. Yes, we not only have to keep governing, but we’ve got to run again and keep doing this because you can’t let those who want to inflict pain on others bring harm to communities. You can’t let them win.”

Ed: Donald Trump made the same choice in 2023-4. It’s a good profile of Shapiro, who should be making this point more strongly over the last few days.

===

Ed: Fetterman >>>> Shapiro, but Shapiro >>> most of the rest of the Democrats.

===

Ed: They are being recruited and trained to make tragic decisions. AWFLs are signing up for the chance to be cannon fodder for the cult of the Left.

===

Ed: Naaah. She’ll just be trained to obstruct an ICE operation. There’s more than one way to get people off the Left’s payroll.

===

Noah Rothman at NRO: Even the most jaded among us should readjust our priors when the evidence warrants it, which is precisely what U.S. intelligence is doing. “US intelligence agencies are reassessing their view from earlier this week that the protests in Iran did not pose a threat to the regime,” Axios reported Friday. Israeli intelligence may also be revising its assessment of the threat that the uprising poses to the Islamic Republic’s stability.

Those of us who would love to see the Iranian theocracy meet the justice it is due at the hands of its captive people have been burned before. It’s an understandable psychological defense mechanism to avoid over-investing in the success of the anti-establishment protesters in the streets of every major Iranian city. But at a certain point, that defense mechanism becomes a blindfold, obscuring the truth that’s right in front of our eyes. Reflexively dismissing the objective novelty of the conditions on the ground in Tehran today, merely to spare yourself the letdown if they fail once again to liberate Iran, is cynicism masquerading as wisdom.

Maybe this time, optimism isn’t an expression of naïveté. Maybe this time, the uprising doesn’t just “feel” different. It is different.

Ed: It is, in some part because for the first time, the uprising is coinciding with American leadership that isn’t obsessed with cutting deals with the regime.

===

Ed: Pray for a free Iran. And thank Elon Musk for doing what he can to facilitate the transition.
