Rep. Greg Steube, Florida Republican, wants the D.C. area’s Metrorail to be renamed the Trump Train.
His bill was introduced Thursday and has no other sponsors. In a release, Mr. Steube also called for the multijurisdiction Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, or Metro, to be renamed the Washington Metropolitan Authority for Greater Access.
The Trump Train name refers to a campaign slogan and motif of President Trump.
The Greater Access tag would result in MAGA, another tip of the hat to the president.
“WMATA has received billions in federal assistance over the years and continues to face operational, safety and fiscal challenges. In the spirit of DOGE, this bill demands accountability by conditioning federal funding on reforms that signal a cultural shift away from bureaucratic stagnation toward public-facing excellence and patriotism,” Mr. Steube said.
Metro and its transit system received $614 million in grants in 2024, according to WTOP-FM, money that went toward operations and maintenance.
If passed into law, the bill would deprive Metro of funding until the agency and Metrorail were renamed. Mr. Steube made no mention of Metrobus in his release or in the bill.
“WMATA needs a fresh identity that aligns with efficiency, service quality and renewed public trust,” the congressman said. “These new names serve as a bold rallying point for much-needed reform.”
He also cited upcoming major events in the District, including soccer’s FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 and the NFL draft in 2027, as reasons to ensure new funding via the name changes.
