Donald Trump says election night was not ‘good for anybody’ after Democratic sweep

President Trump on Wednesday lamented Democrats scoring victories in the four major races of this year’s election, saying that he did not think the results were good for the Republican Party or the American public.

“It was not expected to be a victory. I don’t think it was good for Republicans. I’m not sure it was good for anybody, but we had an interesting evening, and we learned a lot,” Mr. Trump said at a breakfast with Republican senators at the White House.

The breakfast was held the morning after Democrats swept the major races in this year’s election. Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race, Rep. Mikie Sherrill captured the New Jersey governor’s office, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger won Virginia’s governorship, and voters approved Prop 50, California’s redistricting ballot measure that favors Democrats.

Exit polling showed voters went to the polls worried about the economy along with broader discontent with the state of the country.

As the results were rolling in, Mr. Trump cited unnamed pollsters who attributed the Republican losses to the government shutdown and the fact that he wasn’t on the ballot. The shutdown is now the longest in history.

Trump wasn’t on the ballot and the shutdown were the two reasons that Republicans lost elections tonight,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social.

The Democrats won decisive victories in Virginia and New Jersey, just one year after both states moved closer to the GOP.

In New Jersey, a race that was widely expected to be close, Ms. Sherrill beat Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli by double digits (56.2% to 43.2%) with 95% of the ballot counted Wednesday morning.

And in Virginia’s governor race, Ms. Spanberger defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears by more than 15 points (57.5% to 42.3%) with 96% of the vote counted.

In contrast, Mr. Trump lost Virginia and New Jersey last year by 5.7 points and 5.9 points, respectively.
