A deputy U.S. marshal exchanged gunfire with a male person near the District’s Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Thursday, the U.S. Marshals Service says.
The shooting occurred at around 10 a.m. at the corner of Seventh and L streets NW, U.S. Marshal for the D.C. Superior Court Robert Dixon said at a press conference posted online by Washington’s WTTG.
“We do know that shots were fired and that the officer is well, and that the person, the civilian that was struck by the fire, has been taken to the local hospital where he is currently in surgery as we understand it,” Mr. Dixon said.
He added that while the U.S. Marshals Service doesn’t know all the details of the incident, the officer “perceived a threat, during which gunfire was exchanged.”
The law enforcement agent involved is a veteran deputy U.S. marshal and wasn’t wounded, Mr. Dixon said.
Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith said at the press conference that the person shot is a male but that law enforcement wasn’t sure whether he’s an adult or a juvenile.
A Chevy Tahoe was towed away from the scene with five bullet holes through its windshield, according to D.C.’s WRC-TV.
