Delta wing part falls off, lands on North Carolina driveway

Part of a wing flap fell off a Delta Air Lines plane over North Carolina on Tuesday.

The part from the Boeing 737-900 was found on a Raleigh driveway the next morning.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on its website that the flap part came off during Delta Flight 3247 from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

The Raleigh Police Department told Durham’s WTVD that a caller alerted it to the plane part blocking the driveway at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and that no injuries or property damage were reported.

Police then alerted the FAA, which also got confirmation from Delta Air Lines that a plane part disengaged.

A Delta spokesperson told CBS News that “after the aircraft landed safely, it was observed that a portion of the left wing’s trailing edge flap was not in place. Delta is fully supporting retrieval efforts and will cooperate with investigations, as nothing is more important than safety.”

The spokesperson said 109 passengers and six crew were on the plane.
