Consumer safety officials warn of choking hazard with fake ‘Labubu’ dolls

Fake “Labubu” dolls and keychains are small enough to choke a child, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warned in a safety alert.

In addition to being small themselves, some fake Labubu dolls, also known as “Lafufu” to differentiate them from the real article, break into smaller pieces that also pose a choking hazard.

Consumer safety officials said Monday that consumers should be wary of bargains or deep discounts, as some deals are, in fact, too good to be true, and that people should only purchase items from trusted vendors.

“These fake Labubu dolls are dangerous, illegal, and have no place in American homes. No parent should have to wonder if a toy will stop their child from breathing. Protect your children and buy only from [a] reputable seller,” said acting Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Peter Feldman.

The authentic dolls are made exclusively by Chinese retailer Pop Mart, and are distinguished from fakes by holographic Pop Mart stickers, QR codes and, on some newer Labubu dolls, an ultraviolet stamp on one foot, consumer safety officials said.

Bright colors and an incorrect number of teeth are other signs a doll is a fake, officials said. The official Labubu dolls have nine teeth.
