Climber’s ‘Skyscraper Live’ ascent of 1,667-foot tower in Taiwan delayed by rain

Alex Honnold put off plans to climb the 1,667-foot-tall Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan due to weather.

Netflix is now planning to stream his ascent as “Skyscraper Live” starting at 8 p.m. Eastern time Saturday. The 40-year-old Californian aims to climb the tower without the use of protective gear or ropes, a method known as free solo climbing.

The event was originally scheduled to stream live Friday, which is Saturday in Taiwan.

“Safety remains our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding,” Netflix said on social media.

In his own post, Mr. Honnold showed a video of the wet conditions and said, “Sadly it’s raining in Taipei right now so I don’t get to go climbing today. But I’ve been really touched by all the support and well wishes from folks.”

The Taipei 101 tower has that many floors. It’s the world’s 11th-tallest, according to the Council on Vertical Urbanism’s Skyscraper Center.

In 2004, Alain Robert also climbed the Taipei 101 tower, but the Frenchman used a safety rope, according to Reuters.

Mr. Honnold is most famous for climbing the El Capitan rock formation in Yosemite National Park without a safety net, as captured in the 2018 Oscar-winning National Geographic documentary “Free Solo.”
