Chicago’s Mayor Spent His No Kings Hour at the Park Channeling the French – HotAir

And you know, I probably mean that in more ways than one.

First and foremost, they tend to do things that are counterproductive – repeatedly. Then they affect an air of hurt, wounded arrogance, and double down on whatever it is they were doing, insulted and crushed that they were interrupted by either life or your stupid questions about what they were doing.

This is Brandon Johnson’s forte – angry black man act. Not remotely accomplished. Not a dynamic individual.

Just pissed off at the world while accomplishing nothing but ruin for those around him.

The man oozes grievance and false bravado.

He has little else to offer.

As his city sinks into a cesspool of crime, poverty, and despair largely of his own making as a result of his two miserable years in office, he is trying to use the Trump administration as both an excuse to cover his own incompetence and malfeasance and as a rallying cry for progressive troops to join him.

He is flailing and failing miserably on all accounts.

Nobody likes him. Johnson also finds this irksome.

Mayor Johnson’s 6% Approval Shows: Race-Baiting Can’t Cover up Epic Public Safety Failure

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson escalated his rhetoric in Washington last week, framing criticism of his administration and national policy debates through the lens of race. Speaking at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation gathering on Friday, Johnson told a mostly Black audience that recent pushback against progressive mayors was racially motivated.

“I just want to lift up the fact that the very places that are under attack are all spaces that are led by Black leaders,” Johnson said, according to Politico’s Illinois Playbook. “We just got to name it. I know we know that, but I want to say it out loud that it’s very intentional, because there is an extremism in this country that has not accepted the results of the Civil War and they’re fully engaged in the rematch.”

…But critics argue the real provocation is Johnson’s repeated insistence on inserting racism into every debate, while ignoring the day-to-day safety and security of Chicago’s residents. Since 2022, the city has welcomed more than 52,000 migrants – regardless of background or criminal history – at a taxpayer cost of $3.1 billion for food, shelter, clothing, and health care. Meanwhile, violent crime, retail theft, and carjackings continue to erode confidence in City Hall.

If Johnson insists on making this a conversation about race, opponents say, then the refusal to protect Chicago’s families – many of whom are themselves Black and Latino – is the true form of racism. Parents afraid to let their children walk to school, seniors trapped in unsafe neighborhoods, and working-class communities absorbing the brunt of migrant resettlement costs are left vulnerable.

The ‘rich folks’ whom he’s threatened with higher taxes, but who have already forked over a small fortune to indulge his whimsical progressive approach to solving a crime problem that’s only gotten worse…

The weekend of July 4, 2024, was a bloody one in Chicago. Over 100 people were shot in the city and, for 19 Chicagoans, this was the last holiday weekend they ever would see. In its wake, this city’s business leaders announced a remarkable thing: they had come up with $104 million to fight the violent crime that they could see was threatening not just their business interests but the city in which many had chosen to raise their families and recruit others.

The list of contributors to an initiative begun earlier in the year was extensive and filled with big Illinois names: McDonald’s, JP Morgan Chase. Northern Trust, Hyatt Hotels, Illinois Tool Works, Allstate. Wealthy philanthropists, such as the Crown Family, were already part of an initiative managed by the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago. The money was to support something called Scaling Community Violence Intervention for a Safer Chicago, or SC2. The idea was to take the CVI initiatives that had proved promising and massively expand them: initially, the plan was to focus on seven Chicago neighborhoods, including several where bodies had been found the previous weekend.

This was not the first time the business community had sounded the alarm about crime. In 2021, when pandemic-era crime was rampant, leaderssuch as Jack Lavin, president of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, had warned it could stall the city’s recovery. But that was rhetoric. By 2024, the business leaders had come up with cash, with a commitment of more to come.

…are feeling betrayed yet again by a rapacious buffoon who sees them as little more than a cash cow to finance his failures and perpetual grievance war.

…Sure they do. That’s why they ponied up all that money last year for something that actually is Johnson’s job, not theirs. They all remain committed to the program. Or maybe that should be remained, now the Johnson administration has co-opted the narrative and turned what was an act of civic service from the private sector into a punching bag for socialists. And disingenuously so too. He has turned generous allies — at least on the matter of fighting violent crime — into adversaries.

There was yet worse news for business in this tax-larded $16.6 billion budget. Johnson also proposes to hike the cloud-computing tax from 11% to 14%, aiming to take the diminishing group of big corporations — always with the big corporations — for another $333 million. That’s a 27.2% increase on the heels of last year’s 22% increase in that tax. This is another job killer (or in Johnsonian parlance, another job creator). This money, too, is apparently to be earmarked for community safety, although the limits of that definition surely are in the eye of the beholder and, in realty, this is just plugging a massive hole in the budget and poking the “ultra-rich,” by which Johnson means large businesses, in the eye.\

They are packing their corporate bags.

AU REVOIR

…Of late, that train has been moving in the other direction. Citadel has left, Boeing has left. With a big tax, it could become an express.

But Johnson hasn’t softened his tone, hasn’t mollified his stance to reach out to the businesses that are left.

PAY YOUR FAIR SHARE AND KEEP PAYING

And this weekend, Hizzonner’s true revolutionary French fervor came to the fore in front of the No Kings crowd.

Vive le strike générale!

You don’t get much more Frenchified than calling for a general strike.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson boldly called for Americans to stage a general strike during his speech at his city’s ‘No Kings’ rally on Saturday.

Summoning people of all backgrounds to unite and take a stand against President Donald Trump’s “tyranny,” the “ultra-wealthy” and corporate greed, Johnson said, “We are going to make them pay their fair share in taxes to fund our school, to fund jobs, to fund healthcare, to fund transportation.”

“Democracy will live on because of this generation,” he proclaimed. “Are you ready to take it to the courts and to the streets?

It was an audacious declaration from the mayor, who has risen to the top of Trump’s list of enemies as he resists the vicious immigration operations and arrival of hundreds of National Guards currently shaking Chicago.

I think they’re flattering Johnson, to say he’s ‘at the top’ of Trump’s list. He’s a pernicious gadfly, and the ‘vicious immigration operations’ was a nice rhetorical choice. Then again, it was a HuffPo reprint.

And here’s their hero, the little general, all ready to lead his troops.

What troops is a good question, but there are always fools to follow fools.

…Adding to the pressure is Johnson’s staggering lack of public support. Recent polling shows his approval rating at just 6 percent – a collapse of confidence that underscores growing disillusionment with his leadership. By portraying federal enforcement actions and political criticism as an attack on Black leadership, Johnson risks alienating the very residents he claims to defend.

Illinois State Troopers appear to be disregarding both Pritzker and Johnson as they stand shoulder to shoulder with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents day after day, in the city, and while protecting the Broadview ICE facility.

They’re not going to be any help when Brandon calls a strike, gets what he asks for, and the place descends into utter chaos.

…Yet today, Illinois State Troopers stood shoulder-to-shoulder with ICE, pushing back the chaos outside Broadview’s detention center near Chicago.

This isn’t just law enforcement. it’s a message.

When local politicians bow to mob rule, the state steps up.

President Trump said law and order would return.

Looks like Illinois just blinked first.

Chicago also filed suit against the Trump administration today. Gotta protect that DEI grift.

So many grievances, so little time.

C’est la vie.

*shrugs*

C’est la guerre.
