Canada Wins the Woke Olympics – HotAir

We’ve all become numb to the way the LGBT acronym has slowly expanded over the years until it’s hard to remember what all the letters mean, but an activist in Canada decided to prove once and for all that no one will ever rival our northern neighbor in the woke Olympics.

Get ready for “MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+.” It’s the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious of identity politics, one long string of oppression that uses 10 of the 26 letters of the alphabet (including several it uses twice). And it’s all real as you can tell from the very serious demeanor of this person using it:

Fortunately, I don’t have to use AI to try to parse this because a Canadian editor for Quillette jumped in to explain.

His four points of clarification:

1) the speaker here is @LeahGazan, a fringe minor-party politician. She’s not in the government. She regularly calls for dumb things, such as criminalizing anyone who dares talk candidly about the 2021-era unmarked-graves social panic. CBC types treat her as a serious person because she’s indigenous and because she always talks in the tear-drenched idiom of white-settler colonial evilness. But she’s not.

He’s referring to this story in which activists claimed there was a mass grave of indigenous children at a school in Canada and then failed to provide any evidence for it despite years of looking.

 2) MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ is a mashup of two acronyms (each unique to Canada). Her decision to run them together is hilarious, which is why this has gone viral, but it’s not a common practice, even in rarefied leftist circles.

3) MMIWG refers to “Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls.” The problem of violence against indigenous women is a real and tragic issue. Unfortunately, a couple of years ago, a bunch of activists produced a ridiculous report on the subject that called it a “continuing” (!!!) “genocide,”and demanded that we all call it that. The whole movement collapsed when it was pointed out that something like 80% of the indigenous women who are killed are killed by indigenous men, which is very much off-message from the whole white colonial G-word thing. But the acronym still gets name-dropped when people are indicting Canada for all its infinitely genocidey genociding of everybody

4) “2SLGBTQetcetc…” Americans always ask me what “2S” stands for. It stands for “2 spirited,” a term that white academics popularized 50 years ago to give expression to their mystical reveries about sacred indigenous elf-people living in some precolonial eden-like genderwang Nirvana where everyone has three penises and five vaginas. No one is allowed to ask what the term even means, but our government made it official policy to use ridiculous words like this under Trudeau, so we’re stuck with it. Basically, if you’re an indigenous guy who likes to wear eyeliner, or an indigenous woman with blue hair and sensible shoes, you call yourself “2 spirited” on your govt grant applications. No one is even allowed to ask whether it’s a gender identity or a sexual orientation. It apparently exists in some exalted state that defies this kind of rigid colonial typology, or something like that.

In fact, the author wrote a whole article about the 2S part of this and the fact that no one seems to be able to fully explain what it means. Here’s a sample:

Last week, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), the province’s elementary-school teachers union, published what the authors present as a primer on Two-Spirit identity, a document written in close consultation with 2S-identified Indigenous people. Since the report’s target audience consists of workaday teachers who educate young students, I imagined that Niizh Manidoowag: Two-Spirit might finally provide me with a straightforward explanation of what the 2S identifier actually means.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t. In fact, one of the main themes of the 32-page document is that the task of defining the Two-Spirit concept is (quite literally) beyond the powers of Western language and epistemology. And in any case, the category is almost completely open-ended: The act of proclaiming oneself Two-Spirited could be a statement about one’s gender, or sexual orientation, or both, or neither. Or 2S can be a statement about one’s politics, spirituality, or simply one’s desire to present as “anti-colonial.”

It sounds at first as if “2S” might be the indigenous version of non-binary or maybe just “queer” but the article suggests “two-spirit” isn’t necessarily a statement about yourself. It’s partly a statement about your insight into the world around you and seems to have religious overtones.

Anyway, I’m really hoping that this can be put back in the “absurdist Canadian genderwang containment chamber” where it escaped from. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it caught on.

One of the keys to understanding wokeness is that it’s not an argument subject to criticism like other arguments. It’s most often presented as a demand for compliance. The woke don’t want to debate you, they want you to agree with whatever it is they are saying. The more arcane and absurd the demand they make on you is, the more satisfaction they seem to get from your eventual compliance.

All that to say, many of these nuts would love it if everyone around them felt obligated to memorize “MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+.” That would serve as a constant reminder of their absolute control over the discussion, not unlike a general learns to expect a salute when he passes.

Update: This is fun.
