A California woman was hit with multiple vehicle tickets from across the U.S. caused by cars using novelty plates that looked similar enough to hers to fool license plate readers.
Suzi Kiefer drives a Dodge Magnum with California plates reading “LUVSICK.” Since May, she has received 15 tickets for toll violations, running red lights and speeding from San Francisco, but also from Illinois, New Jersey and Texas, according to Los Angeles’ KCAL-TV.
When she examined the photos accompanying the tickets, she found they were for other cars, and she disputed the 15 violations.
“I started calling every single ticket and discussing with whoever answered the phone and explained that this is not my car. Clearly, it’s not my Dodge Magnum. If you look at the photos, there are Mercedes, some are old Chevys,” Ms. Kiefer told KCAL.
The cars that were the cause of the tickets all had novelty plates also reading “LUVSICK” on a white background with the name of clothing brand Broken Promises written at the top in hot pink cursive font.
The background and brand name were similar enough to set off license plate readers.
Ms. Kiefer successfully appealed the 15 tickets.
Broken Promises has not responded to a request for comment.
